Ahhhhhh..... I hate making COOKIES!!!!!!!!

Alright I need to vent......

So I enjoy cooking. I really do I love preparing a meal, making bread or rolls, I LOVE making soup. But, I hate making Cookies!!! They are EVIL!! I have never had the cookie making talent. I don't really like cookies so it wasn't that big of a deal to me until lately because Jeremy LOVES cookies, Desmond is the Cookie Monster, and Kiana and I need some bonding during the day while the boys are all away (Desmond napping, Karston at school, and Jeremy is at work.)

So for the last week or so Kiana and I have been making cookies everyday. I kid you not when I say NONE of them have turned out! The kids still seem to enjoy them and when Karston's friends come over after school they will eat them but, Jeremy wouldn't have a clue that I have even attempted to make cookies because I have rid my house of any evidence of these failed cookie attempts before he comes home. Okay I don't want you to get the wrong idea. Its not that I think Jeremy would make fun of me or do something mean to me because I am such a crappy cookie cook (did I just say that) its more because I really have been trying to think of ways I can show Jeremy appreciation and I would hate to give him a pile of yucky cookies that is to resemble how much I appreciate him. Ahhhhhh....... What is it?? Why can't I make cookies?

I think the biggest problem is patience. With sugar cookies I don't want to wait 2 hours until the cookie dough is set I want them now. With all the other kind of cookies I really have come to the conclusion that they just don't like me and that's just fine because I don't like them either.

Okay right now I am watching Desmond eat one of these snickerdoodles I attempted making today (that turned out all flat) He is dipping it in his water and telling me how yummy it is. It looks disgusting.

So if anyone out there in this blogging world has any fool proof cookie recipe that they would be willing to share with me because I not giving up I am going to make cookies everyday until I figure out what I am doing wrong! Until then I will continue to buy cookies from Paradise Bakery put, them on a plate and pretend that I'm the one that made them.

Cookies can be so tempermental. I have a great sugar dough recipie that you don't have to put in the fridge. I also have a good choc. chip oatmeal one. I made snickerdoodles the other day the first dozen I cooked were nice looking & then the rest of them went flat. I have no idea why. What are Jeremy's favorite kind of cookies? I'll email you some of my recipies. Good luck!

Your snickerdoodles turned out to FLAT? I have never heard of such a thing. Maybe you are just being to hard on yourself. A cookie is a cookie and my family get soooooo excited that I have actually taken the time to pamper them with cookies at all that they really could care less what they taste like. And yes....i do serve them even if they are slightly over cooked or even FLAT!

You crack me up......FLAT cookies........

Karli,
Try the snickerdoodle recipe I put in the old ward cookbook. I guarantee it as it came from my mission cookbook. If elders can make them-anyone can make them.
If you cook them at the temperature in my recipe they should not be flat. Even better if you have a baking stone you can cook them on. Good luck! I've never been any good at chocolate chip cookies, but I can make other kinds just fine. Go figure!

Cookies are evil! I call mine grease plasters because that's what they look like! I totally get you! I've pretty much given up on them too!

I seriously love using the Betty Crocker pre-made mixes. They come in a package and you add butter and an egg and they are awesome! Especially the chocolate chip ones. They are quick and easy and we LOVE them :) Anyway, give them a try! I know they aren't completely homemade, but they sure taste like they are!

I think you are being to hard on yourself. Payton says the cookies are delicious. Maybe I had better make some so he will stay and play at my house for a change.

I've always had better success with cookies if I use cold butter instead of room temperature. When the butter gets soft, it spreads more on the pan, making flat cookies (that burn faster, as I'm sure you're aware :)) Also, make sure you're using real butter, not margarine or vegetable spread (even if the recipe says you can)--they have a higher water content and again, make the cookies spread. I usually use 2-3 cookie sheets when I'm baking, so that each batch of dough goes on a cool pan instead of a hot one...again, if the butter melts the cookies spread. I usually use an ice cream scoop to make balls of dough, and then flatten them just a little with 2-3 fingers.

Wow. I'm long winded about cookies. Sorry.

Hope that helps a little, and that you're met with more success with your cookies!

The secret is to use half butter and half crisco shortening and make sure you have a good pan. That's it!! You'll have nice non flat cookies!! Good luck!

Karli, I love making cookies. I can totally bake, but I am terrible making an actual meal especially with rising breads. So my only advice is to appreciate the real cooking skills you have. It's much more practical to be good at making a meal because out of necessity you do that at least 3 times a day! Forget the cookies, they aren't good for anyone anyway! I'm sure Kiana will love making meals, bread, or soups, as long as she gets to be with you!

I've never heard such crazy cookie talk! Just eat the dough, that will solve your problem!

My best advice is to use real butter and not margarine. Take the butter out of the fridge ahead of time. Room temperature butter mixes in better than cold. If you have to soften it in the microwave it's hard to get it just right and if it melts you cookies will spread just like if you use margarine.

Also, make sure to adjust your recipe for high altitude. Add enough flour so that the dough isn't sticking to your fingers. There are a lot of bad chocolate chip cookie recipes out there and you have to experiment to find one that you like. I can never get the ones on the back of the chocolate chip bag to turn out. They usually spread, expecially when I don't add extra flour and have to figure it out by trial and error.

I have a snickerdoodle recipe that works really well as well as a chocolate chip one that I love. I'm on my way out right now, but remind me and I'll email them to you.

Hi! I found your blog while blog stalking and had to share my chocolate chip cookie recipe. It is easy and I haven't ever failed (unless I dont set the timer)

1 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 1/4 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
6 oz choc chips (1/2 a bag)( I use more especially if they are the mini chips

Cream together shortening, sugar, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. Add in flour, salt, and baking soda. when all mixed add in choc chips. drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake at 375 for 8 minutes.

Hope these work for you!

And this is where I come out of the blod stalking. Ok since I didn't hear anyone offer you this key clue to good cookies I will throw it in. Cookies are affected by the order of the mixing of ingredients. I know annoying but true. Don't dump everything in and then mix there is order that should be followed. First mix the butter and sugar together this is often called creaming in recipes. Then add the wet ingredients like vanilla and eggs. Mix again. Then add dry ingredients but not chips if you happen to be using a chip recipe. Once the flour and stuff is mixed taste the dough. If it appears too sticky add a little more flour and mix. Then add your chips and mix breifly. Now you are ready to bake. Make sure your oven shelf is set in the middle or close too. Frequently on the left side of an oven there are letters for the shelves. C is for cookie. Make sure it is on that shelf. I know this sounds odd but as a child I couldn't figure out how my friend's moms would use the exact same recipe as my Mom and their cookies tasted horrible compared to Mom's then I watched one of them make them once and this is where I found the key. Hope that helps.

Well golly gee, I never had a problem with my cookies until I read your post. I've been jinxed! I've made 7 batches the way I always have and they've decided to run very very thin. I didn't do anything different! Dumb cookies! Hope you've found a cure!
